The safest cities in Europe for digital nómadas

1. Venice, Italy

With 78.69% of women feeling comfortable walking alone, the city outperforms many of its European counterparts. Its charming canals, rich history and vibrant culture make it a very attractive destination. But beyond its beauty, Venice stands out for its welcoming atmosphere toward foreigners and its strong perception of safety for solo female travelers. Its pedestrian-friendly and well-lit layout also contributes to the sense of security, making it an excellent choice for telecommuters.

2.Valencia, Spain

Spainóa has long been a very attractive destination for digital nóa, and Valencia offers the perfect combination of affordability, security and cultural richness.  It has the highest proportion of female digital nóa in this study, at 22%, indicating that more and more women are choosing it as a base. Portugal takes the crown by scoring impressively across the board, with five of its six cities ranked in the top 20. This destination invites digital nomads with its special visa, which allows remote workers to live and work there for up to one year. However, Spain is not far behind, standing out with three cities in the Top 100: Valencia, Alicante and Barcelona, all offering a vibrant mix of culture, community and safety for those seeking a nómada experience full of possibilities.

The world's safest cities for digitally nód women

1.Taipei, Taiwón

Taipei ranks first as the safest city for digitally nód women. Reports on the Taiwanese capital highlight that public transportation is reliable and convenient, even late at night, and that it is not uncommon for women to go out alone at night.

The city also ranks first on many other factors, such as friendliness to foreigners, perception of female safety and women's rights legislation. Taiwan also scored very well overall, with Kaohsiung (the other Taiwanese city in the study) in 7th place.

In addition, those wishing to telecommute from the countryís can take advantage of Taiwanís new digital nomad visa for stays of up to six months, which the countryís launched in early 2025 to attract digital professionals and boost tourism.

2.Chiang Rai, Thailand

Another East Asian city took the second spot, this time in Thailand: Chiang Rai. Nestled in the hills in northern Thailand, Chiang Rai is one of the country's least visited cities, but equally charming. The data suggests that women feel safe when walking alone here, and the city ranks third in the entire study in this regard.

Chiang Rai also has an above-average proportion of digitally naive women and men, with a 22% higher percentage than any of the other Thai cities in the study. In fact, as a whole, northern Thailand and Bangkok scored much higher than the country's southern destinations, far outperforming them in terms of concern for safety when walking alone at night.

3.Montevideo, Uruguay

Closing the ranking of the safest cities for digital natives is a large city in the Americas. The Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, ranked first in all factors related to women's rights, as well as in the perception of friendliness for both women and foreigners.

The proportion of digitally naive women to men in the city is only slightly lower than the study average, at 17%. Montevideo scored lower than the other two top-three cities in terms of how safe women feel walking alone, but is still well above the study average.

METHODOLOGY

We took a list of the 200 cities ranked the best for digital nómadas, by digital nómadas, at Nomads.com and analyzed them based on a number of different factors to determine safety for women.

- Safety when walking alone as a woman: take into account concerns of being attacked when walking alone as a woman.
- Friendliness to strangers: to consider receptiveness to nómadas in general.
- Friendliness to women: to consider how welcoming women are.
- Proportion of digital nómadas women/men: to find out where there are more nómadas women.
- Legislation on sexual harassment in the workplace: to consider attitudes towards women in the workplace.
- Women can hold the same positions as men: to consider attitudes towards women workers.
- Offering of digital nómadas for more than 6 months: to find out when remote workers are explicitly welcomed.
