Five trends that will shape the traveler experience in 2020
The ‘hotelligence’ culture, sustainable hyperlocalism, ‘phigitalism’, gastronomic tourism and the personalization of experiences that generate knowledge are on the travel agenda for 2020. In a universe saturated with offers for travelers, there are still spaces to be filled. Barceló Hotel Group has conducted a survey through its social channels in which nearly 100,000 users from around the world have participated, and presents the travel trends for next year.
Hotelligence
Faced with the excess of information, the massification of messages on social networks and opinions on digital platforms, the traveler is increasingly looking for the figure of the local prescriber to ensure reliability and response to their needs.
The hotelligence culture will set the trends of 2020. The hotel maintains its position as a host and inspires reliability, provides local knowledge and personalized attention. According to survey data, 85% of people trust the recommendations of the hotel where they stay.
Hyperlocalism in a sustainable key
To minimize environmental impact, travel to secondary destinations and the commitment to local experiences will experience an upturn in activity. In 2020, travelers will opt to discover lesser-known authentic places. In the face of mass tourism, local experiences are gaining strength. 75% of travelers surveyed show more inclination for authenticity and localism, but without forgetting the most emblematic of the destination.
‘Phigitalismo’ el gran aliado del viajero
In 2020, the traveler becomes more demanding and seeks a complete experience that combines digital experience —a travésés of continuous technological innovation— and human treatment. The trend study determines that there are three phases in which the use of technology varies: 40% of respondents look for inspiration on social networks before embarking on their trip and online platforms are the preferred way for more than 50% of users to book experiences. But once at the destination, personal recommendations from hotel staff and reviews from other travelers are the most reliable source of information in 80% of cases.
Foodie trips
In 2020, travelers choose gastronomy as their main experience to discover, through local cuisine, the local culture. Discovering dishes, restaurants, recipes, chefs and getting to know local gastronomy in depth will be the plan of choice for 46% of those surveyed. In addition, for most respondents, the gastronomic experience is complete when the hospitality and service received have been satisfactory.
Customization: DIY plans
Travelers enjoy designing their stay based on local experiences that bring them knowledge. More than 80% of travelers say they enjoy pre-arrival planning. It's Do It Yourself. 57% of travelers seek to expand their knowledge when they travel.
