eBiking, the future of sustainable urban mobility

eBiking is consolidating its position as one of the main means of transport at the forefront of sustainable mobility. The growing popularity of electric bicycles, not only in Europe but worldwide, underlines a clear trend towards more environmentally friendly, flexible and efficient transport solutions. In Spain, the visibility of this means of transport is increasing and in countries such as Germany it already reflects a significant change in consumer preferences.

In this sense, in Spain sales of this type of vehicles have grown by 2.28%, reaching 241,578 units, according to data from the Association of Brands and Bicycles of Spain (AMBE). But this boom in the adoption of eBikes is not fortuitous, but responds to a growing demand for transportation alternatives that reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in cities.

In this sense, the eBike is consolidated as one of the most sustainable means of transport in terms of emissions. When using an eBike, the average CO2 emissions from electrical consumption are approximately 3 g per person-kilometer (pkm), depending on the energy mix. In comparison, a car with an internal combustion engine emits around 166 g of CO2/pkm.

Electric bicycles have undoubtedly become an interesting option for everyday life, thanks to their innovative features that offer comfort and efficiency. Its motors and batteries make it possible to travel longer distances with less effort, thanks to its electric assistance, facilitating daily travel even on difficult terrain or slopes.

They also offer an effective solution for urban traffic, reducing dependence on motorized vehicles and promoting a more active lifestyle. Thus, through this electric assistance and the possibility of traveling longer distances with less effort, electric bicycles are positioning themselves as an ideal alternative for daily transportation and leisure activities.

CONNECTED BIKING

This transportation has evolved a lot in the last few years. Since the introduction of its "Connected Biking" concept in 2014, for example, Bosch eBike Systems has enhanced the user experience through advanced technologies. Proof of this is its smart system, launched in 2021, which integrates all the essential components: drive unit, battery, display and smartphone. All this to enable smooth communicationand an enhanced user experience.

In addition, the eBike Flow app, designed by Bosch, which has been adopted by more than a million cyclists worldwide, offers functionalities ranging from protection against theft and loss of data, to the eBike Flow app, designed by Bosch, which has been adopted by more than a million cyclists worldwide, offers functionalities ranging from protection against theft and loss of data, to the eBike Flow app, designed by Bosch, which has been adopted by more than a million cyclists worldwide, offers functionalities ranging from protection against theft and loss of data, to protection against theft and loss of data;anti-theft protection to advanced navigation, performance customization and constant updates.

"Connected eBikes are establishing themselves as the standard for the future of mobility", says Laura Sánchez, Bosch eBike Systems Marketing Manager for Spain. In her opinion, “as cities adapt to new forms of transportation, connectivity and digitalization will play an essential role in the integration of eBikes with the urban infrastructure, through different smart services”.
