The cost of correcting typos on airline tickets

¿Who has not ever danced a letter when writing his name or surname? Correcting the typo can be a hoop. The cost of changing the name of the airline ticket varies from one airline to another and also depends on the type of fare contracted. Ryanair is by far the airline that charges the most, according to a study by Destinia.

THE AIRLINES THAT CHARGE

Ryanair is by far the airline that charges the most both for changing the name or surname of the holder and for correcting a spelling mistake:

The Irish airline charges a total of 110€ per passenger if the formalities are done up to two hours before the flight via the web and 160€ if the traveler wants to do it by phone or at the airport itself.

Norwegian makes free typo corrections –up to three letters only–  but charges 55€ per leg (100€ in the case of long-haul international flights) to change the name or holder from the web. If you choose the phone or want to do it from the airport, the cost rises to 57€ and 102€, respectively. Except for customers of its Flex and Premium Flex tariffs, which have this service free.

Alitalia charges 60€ for changing up to three letters –can only be done by teléfono–, but does not allow changes of either name or holder.

At Vueling it is free to reverse the order of the surnames or change the second of them by phone, for the rest it charges: 50€ per way + the fare difference (with Excellence you only pay the fare difference) for making any change or correction from the web and 50€ by telephone management to change the first surname.

EasyJet charges between 25€ and 65€ to make online changes in the name or change the holder, depending on whether the flight anticipation is greater or less than sixty days. And the price rises to 31€ and 70€, respectively, if  the steps are made by telephoneó nicamente.

In the case of Wizz Air is 45€ per way to change the name or holder vía web and 15€ extra per transaction to the online rate, which amounts to a total of 60€ if you call by phoneéfono.

Transavia charges 50€ per way plus the fare difference when making name or cardholder changes, as long as it has not been billed before.

The cost of the transfer at Volotea charges 40€ for name changes if done online or by phone and 50€ from the airport, amount to which must be added the fare increase.

American Airlines charges 30€ to change more than three letters.

FREE ERRATA CORRECTION

At EasyJetKLMDelta and Transavia there is no charge to correct typographical errors. Lufthansa and Volotea allow free exchange of up to two letters by phone only.

For its part, Air EuropaNorwegianSmart WingsTAP PortugalWizz and Turkish Airlines will make changes of up to three letters in the ticket holder free of charge.Binter also agrees to change up to three letters free of charge but major changes involve issuing a new ticket and reimbursement subject to airline approval.

The airlines of the IAG group, Iberia and British Airways, allow you to change a letter for free but only by phone. In addition, if there are changes (taxes, fuel surcharges, fare…), they charge the existing difference.

Air France Air France also allows to change for free only one letter of the ticket, the rest, you have to consult with the company for valuation.

THE MOST STRICT

Some airlines are stricter and do not allow changes of holder or change the name: American AirlinesEmirates –also does not allow typo corrections–; Alitalia,  BinterAir FranceKLMDeltaLufthansaTAP PortugalIberiaBritish AirwaysAir EuropaQatarTurkish Airlines and Smart Wings.

This is undoubtedly a high cost that is difficult for customers to understand and that, while it involves management, airlines could do in their systems at an affordable price; The airline would be able to do it in their systems at a lower price than some charge but most treat it as if they had to reissue a new ticket," explains Víctor Oliva, head of Destinia's Transportation area.

Although there is still an unwritten rule that within domestic flights you can board with up to two letters mixed up on the ticket, the reality is that controls are stricter in this regard. Especially to certain destinations such as the United States, where everything must be in perfect condition. Many times, at the agency we detect flagrant errors before issuing the ticket and we warn the client so that he/she can modify it without any penalty," Oliva added.
