Parking in major European cities is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive
Access to private vehicles in the urban centers of the main European capitals continues to be progressively reduced. By 2025, cities such as Barcelona, Paris and Milan have reinforced their sustainable mobility strategies, extending restrictions on the most polluting cars and increasing penalties for those who do not comply with the regulations.
In Barcelona, entering the Low Emission Zone without authorization can result in a fine of 200 euros, while in Milán, the penalty for driving without a permit in the Zaacute;n ZTL of the historic center can range from 80 to 300 euros, depending on the type of vehicle;n for driving without a permit in the área C –the ZTL of the historic center – can range from 80 to 300 euros, depending on the severity of the infraction.
In París, the fine for not having the appropriate Crit’Air environmental sticker is ?68 for passenger cars, and reaches ?135 for larger vehicles.
This regulatory reinforcement is accompanied by a progressive increase in the cost of parking in city centers. According to data from Parclick, in Barcelona, parking in the center already costs an average of 1.11 euros per hour. In Milan, where access to the old town is particularly guarded, the average price is 2.92 euros per hour. In Paris, the average rate in central parking lots is around ?1.92 per hour on average.
In this context, those who need to continue to travel by car —either for work, personal needs or lack of transport alternatives— face an increasingly complex reality. The combination of high penalties, limited access and rising prices is leading many drivers to look for more flexible and economical options. Among them, the option of parking in peripheral areas well connected with public transport or resorting to advance reservation systems in private parking lots is gaining ground.
Digital parking tools have reinforced their usefulness in this new mobility model. According to data from Parclick, in the aforementioned cities it is possible to find parking options below one euro per hour in low-cost modes, as well as valet parking services at airports or stations at prices significantly lower than a penalty.
In addition, booking parking in advance allows access to lower rates and ensures availability in strategic areas, thus mitigating the economic impact of the current restrictions and the progressive increase in the cost of urban parking.
