Overnight stays in Spanish hotels continue to soar to all-time highs

Overnight stays in Spanish hotels increased by 2.5% in January compared to the same month in 2024, to over 16.9 million, the highest figure for a January in the entire historical series, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). This increase is due to the higher number of overnight stays made by foreigners, which increased by 4.2% year-on-year, as those made by Spaniards fell by 0.5%.

 

Travelers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 23.2% and 15.3%, respectively, of total overnight stays by foreigners in January.

The next largest source markets were France, Italy and the Netherlands, which accounted for 6.4%, 5.4% and 4.3% of total overnight stays by non-residents, respectively.

According to the INE, the índice of hotel prices rose by 6.1% in January with respect to the same month of 2024, four days higher than in the previous month, but 1.6 points lower than the rate recorded a year earlier. With the January upturn, Spanish hotel prices have now reached 44 months of consecutive increases.

Canary Islands recorded last January an 11% increase in overnight stays in apartments, up to 4.56 million, with more strength from foreign tourism (3.7 million), which rose 14.6%, while those of residents (810.000) fell by 2.2%, with an average stay that increased to 6.2 nights.

The most sought-after destination was the Comunidad Valenciana, with more than 722,000 overnight stays, and an increase of 0.3% in annual rate, and within it, the Costa Blanca attracted 364,000 nights.

The Valencian Community was also the one that recorded the highest occupancy rate, with 68.2% of the plots offered, which rises to 89.0% on the Costa Blanca.

In Spaña as a whole, overnight stays in extra-hotel accommodations rose by 5.9% in January, to 6.7 million, although they only increased in apartments and fell in cámpines, rural houses and hostels, and prices rose in all categoriesías.

Prices in apartments rose by 7.4% over January 2024, those of hotels rose by 7.2% and those of rural tourism lodgings by 9.8%. Overnight stays by residents fell by 7.1%, while those of non-residents increased by 10.5%, and the average stay stood at 5.4 nights per traveler.
