Earning money from car sharing is now possible thanks to energy savings
The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has included carpooling, or car sharing, in its Energy Savings Certificate System (CAEs) since July. These trips can now generate savings that can be redeemed by users, thanks to companies such as Hoop Carpool, which certify and monetize them.
Hoop Carpool is a Spanish platform that facilitates access to carpooling. Through its algorithm, the application connects drivers and passengers on matching routes, optimizing the journey to reduce the number of cars in circulation and, consequently, the energy consumption.
In a context where Spanish workers spend up to 324€ per month on gasoline and parking, Hoop Carpool offers an alternative that can save more than 3.000€ año for each user.
As a novelty, travelers will now receive 1€ additional for each shared trip, thanks to the Certificados de Ahorro Energético (CAEs) from the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica
(Ministry for Ecological Transition).Hoop Carpool has signed an agreement with DELCAE to sell it the savings from each trip and return them directly to users in the form of an economic aid for each shared trip.
“Getting around as fast as a cab but at the price of public transport is now possible, we just have to share a car”, explains Andrea García, COO of Hoop Carpool.
?How does the Certificate of Energy Savings System (CAEs) work?
Inspired by the successful French model, the CAEs system makes it possible to certify and market energy savings generated by efficiency actions. One CAE is equivalent to 1 kWh of energy savings, which can be sold to energy companies obliged to comply with savings quotas established by law. In Spain, companies such as Naturgy, Iberdrola and Repsol must purchase these certificates to meet their annual energy reduction targets.
In France, the CAEs system has driven more than 20 million rideshares annually, fostering a culture of shared mobility and energy efficiency.
"What does the carpooling kilometer allowance consist of?
The Hoop Carpool platform allows sharing the costs of the trip. Thus, drivers can set a price per trip with a límite of 15 céntimos per km. When energy savings are applied, there is a discount of 4 cents per km for the passenger. The driver receives it in the form of money in his personal wallet, which he can withdraw weekly to his bank account.
