The general director of Apartur, Marian Muro, says that Barcelona will not be able to welcome business and congress tourism if tourist apartments are eliminated, which would put its global competitiveness at risk. In 2024 the Catalan capital will host nearly 2,000 professional events, including trade fairs, congresses, conferences and corporate meetings, with more than 734,000 attendees, 85% of them international.
The MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions) sector plays a strategic role in the Spanish economy, both for its direct impact and its pull effect on other key sectors such as transport, hotels, restaurants, technology and professional services.
