Catalog of airline baggage allowances

78% of users consider that the prices charged by airlines for checking a suitcase are excessive, according to a study conducted by Liligo.com among its users. The truth is that from one airline to another the dimensions and weight of luggage allowance vary considerably, especially between regular and low cost airlines.

LOW COST AIRLINES

Cabin Carry-on Baggage Restrictions

The most permissive airlines

Iberia Express

Iberia Airlines

Airlines with the lowest baggage allowance

are the most permissive;

Iberia Express, EasyJet and JetBlue are the most permissive low-cost airlines. In fact, they do not impose a weight limit so it is possible to travel with them with more weight than the rest. Wizz Air does not impose a weight limit, but the baggage allowance is smaller than the other nine companies studied, all of which have an actual size limit.

Iberia Express, Volotea, Ryanair, Norwegian and JetBlue allow boarding with one carry-on and one other accessory (such as a computer bag) without having to pay a supplement.

The least permissive airlines

Transavia and Wizz Air are the most restrictive low-cost airlines in terms of baggage dimensions. For example, in the case of Wizz Air, luggage must not exceed 42x32x25 cm, compared to EasyJet which allows 56x45x25 cm. In Germanwings luggage must weigh a maximum of 8 kg against 10 kg of most low cost airlines.

On the other hand, it is not a good idea to travel with excess baggage with Volotea, as this airline charges 60 € for excess against 30 € on average that usually charge the rest of airlines íneas. Ryanair is also not far behind with its 50 € surcharge.

Restrictions on checked baggage

The most permissive companies

It is not a must to travel with little luggage when flying on low cost airlines. For example, Iberia Express, Wizz Air, Vueling and Germanwings allow up to 23 kg in the hold.

Adding a checked bag at the airport can cost up to 75 € with low-cost carriers such as Wizz Air, Ryanair, Volotea or Germanwings To save money, it is better to anticipate and do it directly online, where prices vary between 15 and 45 €.

The companiesñías aéreas less permissive

In at least half of the companiesñías low cost is impossible to pay for excess baggage through its website. Nor is it possible to know the price applied in case of exceeding the weight or size of the luggage. There is no choice but to go directly to the check-in counter of each airline at the airport and pay prices ranging from 30 to 150 euros. Some companies such as Volotea, EasyJet, Ryanair, Transavia, Norwegian or Vueling have per kilo excess baggage fees, while others such as JetBlue or Germanwings apply flat rates that vary between 50 and 100 € at the airport.

REGULAR AIRLINES

With regular airlines, carry-on and checked baggage are included in the ticket price. The price for excess baggage between a low-cost airline and a scheduled airline can be multiplied by a factor of three. For a Germanwings traveler, for example, excess baggage can cost 50 euros, while for a Swiss traveler it can cost 150 euros.

The most permissive airlines

Air Europa, Air France-KLM, British Airways and Iberia-Air Nostrum believe in travelers who need to carry a lot of baggage, especially on long-haul trips. These airlines allow 10k g, 12 kg and up to 23 kg of carry-on baggage in the cabin. On the other hand, more than 70% of airlines allow one carry-on plus one accessory. The accessory can be a bag with a camera, a computer or a tablet.

For travelers who wish to simulate the amount to be paid for additional or excess baggage, 50% of airlines offer an online service where you can make the calculation. This is the case, for example, with Air France-KLM, Thomson Airlines or British Airways.

The least permissive airlines

Most of the airlines surveyed allow both carry-on baggage and an accessory, but some airlines are less flexible. Out of 10 airlines studied, 7 do not allow foreseeing and paying online excess baggage or extra baggage charges, and 4 do not offer a baggage simulation service to calculate the cost of extra baggage. Among them are the big historical companies, such as Air France, Iberia, Lufthansa, British Airways or Swiss.
