Worldwide hotel occupancy shows signs of full recovery

Global hotel occupancy levels for April and May 2022 have surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Amadeus data shows that global hotel bookings in June, July and August 2022 are on par with those of 2019, with significant growth potential.

With two years of summer vacation lost to covid-19 restrictions and uncertainty, there is a huge pent-up demand for travel now as the 2022 summer season begins.

According to data from business inteligence of Amadeus’ Demand360, hotel bookings have been on par with 2019, pre-pandemic booking levels since March of this year.

April 2022 was the first month in which they exceeded 2019 occupancy levels and continued to climb in May reaching a new high of 63%, up from 60% in May 2019.

Países such as United States, recorded occupancy levels of 68% for the month, 7% above 2019 results, while Canada reached 64% occupancy in May, 8% higher than in the same éeacute; in 2019.

The data show a similar situation worldwide. The summer months of June, July and August are currently only 1% of 2019 levels.

However, to get a true picture, occupancy must be considered in conjunction with a persistently short booking window, i.e., the number of days travelers book in advance of their trip.

This data shows that the majority of trips (54%) are currently booked between 0 and 7 days before the trip, meaning that hotel occupancy rates currently recorded for the summer months could increase considerably.

In the case of the U.S. travel market, 55% of bookings are made less than a week in advance of travel.

Europe is, in general, a bit more predictable: more than a third of bookings are made within 0 to 7 days (France 33%, Germany 35%, Spain 36% and the UK 39%).

With high demand, the average daily rate (ADR) that hoteliers are able to achieve has been growing steadily since a global low of 83 d in April 2020.

According to Amadeus data for June, July and August 2022, the global average ADR is $200, which is just over 11% higher than in 2019, where the average ADR was $180 for the same months.

As for specific countries are seeing high room rates during the summer, France forecast to reach an ADR of 428 dólars in July 2022, up 29% on 2019 rates.

According to Amadeus' aé booking data as of June 4, 2022, US leads all countries in terms of inbound flights for the upcoming summer months, followed by the UK, France, Germany and then Canada
