Travel agencies may continue to sell travel insurance
The Spanish government has finally decided to exclude travel agencies from the European Directive on Insurance Mediation, which for these intermediaries means in practice the impossibility of selling this product, according to the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies (CEAV).
The new Brussels regulation requires, among other obligations, the constitution of a civil liability policy of 1.7 million euros. According to CEAV, this clause was "impossible for the travel agency sector to comply with". After the efforts made by the association, the executive agrees to leave the professionals of the intermediation outside the Directive.
It also includes requirements in terms of “knowledge” or “ability and honorability”. From the point of view of the Confederation, these requirements would prevent agencies from selling insurance, "not only in Spain, but in any country of the European Union". The association has not commented on the situation in other markets for the time being.
The decision has come after a meeting held by the vice-president of International Relations of CEAV, Eva Blasco, and the manager of this confederation;n, Mercedes Tejero, with the Deputy Director General of Insurance Management and Mediation, Raúl Casado.
Blasco has been “very satisfied” by the fact that the Spanish government “has kept its word and has eliminated the damages of this regulation, which couldía have meant the end of the distribution of travel insurance through most agencies”.
