Three out of four passengers want reclining seats banned on airplanes
A survey by flight and hotel search engine Jetcost reveals the five things that most annoy passengers when flying. Sitting apart from the person you are traveling with is the top one, but what has raised the most controversy is whether or not reclining seats should be banned.
Jetcost decided to conduct this survey after detecting a boom in online sales of the so-called knee defenders, small bumpers that attach to the sides of the seat tray when the seat is lowered and prevent the front passenger from reclining his seat.
According to the survey results, what bothers passengers the most, in this order is:
1. Being in separate seats with a fellow passenger
2. The recline of the front seat.
3. Children crying.
4. Insufficient legroom.
5. Poor service and attention from flight attendants.
Respondents who selected the reclining seat option were also asked whether they had ever done the same thing with their own seat. Sixty-four percent of them admitted that they had. However, they said that when it happens with other passengers they found it rude to be left without legroom (41%) or that they wanted to use their tray table but could not do so with the seat reclined (39%). In addition, 27% of total respondents admitted to having had an argument for this reason.
Finally, 75% of respondents believe that reclining seats should be banned and 12% said they planned to buy some knee defenders for their next flight.
