Electronic payments, the cheapest option for Spaniards abroad
Shopping through electronic payments outside Spain is cheaper than withdrawing money at ATMs or exchanging currency at currency exchange offices, according to a study conducted by TNS Infratest for MasterCard.
To conduct this research, 25 travel routes were analyzed and nine different payment methods were taken into account, as well as the exchange of foreign currency into local currency. In all cases, it was shown that the use of an electronic card at the point of sale had the lowest cost to travelers.
According to the study, the cheapest payment method for Spanish travelers when visiting France is to use their card (credit, debit or prepaid) at the point of sale and the most expensive is to withdraw cash from an ATM with a prepaid card.
On the other hand, when traveling to the United Kingdom or the United States, the cheapest way to shop is to shop with a debit card at the store, while the most expensive option is to exchange currency.
However, travelers are not only concerned about which payment method is cheaper or more expensive. Most want to save time and be worry-free while traveling. In this respect, electronic payments offer many advantages over cash. For example, both contactless payment
and mobile payment allow faster shopping with fewer queues at the cash register, as well as real-time control of expenses. In terms of security and reliability, electronic payments also offer numerous advantages over cash. A good example is EMV chip technology, a global security standard accepted in more than 80 countries, which protects cards from fraud by making each transaction unique and virtually impossible to replicate. In addition, most cards offer travel insurance packages.
